Wireless communication has emerged as the fastest growing field of the communication industry. International Mobile Telecommunication IMT-2000 initiated tow partnership projects to standardize the feasibility and specifications of implementation of Third Generation (3G) wireless services in the world. As a result 3GPP and 3GPP2 are formalized as two parallel projects to evolve standards to provide high quality mobile communication. 3GPP has evolved UMTS and its variants while 3GPP2 and QualComm Ó has evolved cdma20001xRTT Ó, and its variants. All these standards are using CDMA technology to provide “multiple access” of resources to the users. These standards are using traditional TCP/IP protocol stack to provide various Internet enabled applications like browsing, video streaming, etc. The end-to-end communication is divided into tow parts: the first one is between access node and the base station, which is termed as Access Network/Stratum (AN/AS) and the second one is core network (CN) or non-access stratum (NAS).

The performance in the last hop (AN/AS) – between the access node and the base station – plays a vital role in the end-to-end communication and varies in different standards of 3GPP and 3GPP2. Hence one needs to have through knowledge of it to optimize the network performance.

This symposium will focus on standards developed for providing data services in AN/AS. It will cover the fundaments of UMTS Rel 99 and HSDPA – the standards of 3GPP, and cdma2001xRTT and 1xEV-DO – the standards evolved by 3GPP2 and QualComm.

This symposium will be beneficial to

  • Undergraduate/Postgraduate students who wants to expertise on the current technology
  • Telecom professionals, who are involved in the design/development on telecom solutions
  • Researchers in telecom industry, who want to contribute by their research to the next generation wireless telecom
  • Academicians and all who are interested in acquiring the system overview of data services in mobile communications.

Basic knowledge of communication protocols will be useful.
