Brief Biodata of Dr. S. B. Sharma, SAC, Ahmedabad

Dr. Sharma obtained BE & ME in Electronics & Communication engineering in 1970 and 1972 respectively from University of Roorkee, now IIT Roorkee. He was awarded University gold medal in the field of Microwave engineering in ME. He obtained Ph.D. in electronics Engineering from Gujarat University.

He joined E&C Department at University of Roorkee in 1972 as Research Associate where he worked on optical super heterodyne receiver, Photon counting statistics of M-ary laser source and established Radiation Laboratory in addition to teaching load.

Since 1973 at Space Applications Centre, ISRO he has 34 years of academic and diversified research and development experience in the field of electromagnetic modeling and microwave engineering in general and antenna engineering in particular. His outstanding contributions are ground based, airborne and space borne antenna systems for satellite Communication and remote sensing programs of ISRO. He was awarded Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Award in the year 1992, in the field of “Electronics, Telematics and Automation” and Astronautical Society of India Award in 2005, in the field of “Spacecraft and Related Technologies”.

He has been Project Director for two classified strategic projects and Associate Project Director for Multifrequency Scanning Microwave Radiometer on Ocean Sat. – II. He was elevated to the grade of Outstanding Scientist from July 2006. Presently as Deputy Director, Antenna Systems Area he is guiding and supervising the development of state-of-the art antenna for INSAT-4B, INSAT4C-R, INSAT 3D, GSAT 4, GSAT-5, GSAT-7, RISAT, GAGAN, SATNAV projects and advanced R&D on Antennas for Inter Satellite link, Reflectarray Antenna at Ka band , Re-configurable Antenna, Dual band Fractal Antenna , Dual Frequency Dual Polarised Microstrip Patch Antenna as Deputy Director, Antenna Systems Area.

He has been consultant to Antrix Corporation for finalization of various Satellite Configuration for International bids.

He has published more than 105 papers including 27 frequently cited papers in refereed international journals of repute. Being the prime inventor he has filed 15 international patents out of which one patent has already been granted.

He has organized an International Conference on “Antenna Technologies” ICAT-2005, in February 2005 and two international workshop on “Numerical Techniques for Electromagnetic Modeling of Antennas” in February 2005 and “Space Borne Antenna Technologies and Measurement Techniques” in April 2002.
